A Hollywood cast of actors, technicians, and special effects recreate the Battle of Gettysburg as you tour the Battlefield from the famous Double Decker buses that have become a landmark in Gettysburg. The Dramatized Audio Tour brings you into battle as the drama unfolds in Living Stereo. Cannons roar, rifles crack, drums roll and bugles blow. And you re-live it all under the clear skies of Gettysburg and History's names become today's experience: Little Round Top, Devil's Den, Wheatfield, Peach Orchard, Pickett's Charge, High Water Mark.

The Double Decker buses are seasonal - replaced by climate-controlled motorcoaches in winter - but the Dramatized Audio Tour is available year-round.

About Gettysburg National Military Park

The Battle of Gettysburg was a critical turning point in the American Civil War, a conflict that determined the fate of the United States. The site where these two great armies clashed was first preserved by a small group of patriotic citizens and later by the country as a whole. Since 1933, the National Park Service has cared for Gettysburg National Military Park as a symbol of America's struggle to survive as a nation, and as a lasting memorial to the armies and soldiers who served in that great conflict.

About the Battle

In June of 1863, General Robert E. Lee took his Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania. He hoped this action would end the Civil War. Lee's Army, almost 75,000 strong, moved up the Shenandoah Valley. Three brigades of cavalry under General J.E.B. Stuart moved East around the Union's Army of the Potomac and then North through Maryland. They were to scout the Union Army and report to Lee in Pennsylvania. But, the Union Army was too big and Stuart was forced to go around it, delaying his report to Lee until July 2 - leaving the Confederate Commanding General in the dark about the size and disposition of the Army of the Potomac.

The resulting battle - one of the 16 most decisive battles in the history of mankind - engaged 172,000 men. 51,000 were killed, wounded, or missing in action. That battle played out primarily over three fateful days - July 1, 2, and 3. The first skirmish occurred at about 8:00 am on July 1. During the engagement, locations and events would become both famous and infamous - such as Pickett's Charge, Seminary Ridge, Little Round Top, Devil's Den, and the Valley of Death.

This location of the decisive battle of the Civil War, marking both the "High Water Mark of the Confederacy" and the turning point in favor of the preservation of the Union, was further consecrated when President Abraham Lincoln visited Gettysburg to dedicate the National Cemetery where most of the Union dead from the battle are buried. His eloquent "Gettysburg Address" is one of the most memorable political speeches in history.

Shuttle bus service is offered by van from hotels, motels, and campgrounds during the high tourist season (primarily during the summer months). Depending on location, the pickup time is 15, 30, or 45 minutes before the scheduled tour time.
